4 Reasons Why People Should Use Alternative Medicine

Alternative forms of medicine are growing in popularity as people try to find a more holistic approach to their health. Conventional medicine is still very helpful but the underlying effects have sometimes caused people to become more aware of natural approaches to healing and preventative medicine.

1. One of the reasons alternative medicine has been booming recently is because people are tired of taking a pill or other medication for every bump, bruise and cough. For many people, alternative medicine seems more reliable than so-called modern medicine. After all, modern drugs are recalled on a regular basis while acupuncture has been practiced continuously for more than 5,000 years. In many countries, the rush to make a profit on a new drug often leads to the product being placed on the market before its long-term effects are known. The recent prevalence of this problem has caused many people to seek treatment that is tried and true.

2. Many people who seek out alternative medicine also do so because they do not want to fill their bodies with the chemicals that are inherent in more traditional medicine. Often the chemicals involved in prescription medication throw the body into a state of imbalance. For example, many antibiotics prescribed to treat infections cannot differentiate between infection and symbiotic organisms that are required for the human body to work as it should. The antibiotic kills off bacteria in the digestive tract and prevents the body from recovering as it should, perhaps prolong the illness.

Because of this overkill mentality in much of modern medicine, people seek out the kinder, gentler care of alternative medicine. And, in some cases wind up being treated with the herbs from which the modern medicine was derived. A foxglove tea is an herbal treatment for heart trouble, an alternative medicine approach. Digitalis, the medication prescribed for many with heart trouble, is a derivative and concentrated form of the plant.

3. People have begun to place more faith in alternative medicine as most treat the problem rather than the symptoms. Many modern medicines cause additional side effects and the solution of many doctors is to prescribe yet another medication to treat the symptoms. For example, Practitioners of many forms of alternative medicine, including massage therapy and chiropractic, realize that pain is usually a symptom of an underlying problem. In fact, pain is often the last symptom to appear and treating the pain itself is not going to correct the problem. Most people who use modern medicine would rather correct the source of the pain than simply pop a pain pill.

4. Many people seek out forms of alternative medicine because of its emphasis on preventing injury, illness and disease rather than curing it. Alternative medicine providers will still treat acute illness when it occurs, but they are often more focused on making the lifestyle choices to prevent such things from happening.

With the skyrocketing cost of health care, many people are operating under the theory that they will spend less and live happier, more fruitful lives if they can prevent illness. Most forms of alternative medicine place at least some credence in this theory. Many, like massage therapy and chiropractic, attempt to train patients to correct problems before they develop into life altering problems. This approach appeals to many as they seek out total wellness.

Alternative Medicine

Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is a combined term used for various methods or practices of healing brought in practice by physicians or non-physicians, in addition to or apart from the conventional medicine. It is estimated that a little over 33% of the US population uses some form of alternative medicine that is mainly comprised of remedies derived from several different types of traditional and ethnic therapies. All of these therapies have diverse practice and/ or product based guidelines that are not a part of conventional Western medicine. This may include meditation, acupuncture, prayer, herbal supplements, chiropractors, massage therapy and other natural medicines.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a separate division, called The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, that looks into the research, ethical and validation and related issues of alternative medicine that is prevalent in the US.

A recent statistics from the NIH shows that as many as 36% of the American adult population relies on one or more forms of alternative medicine to ward off sickness or derive other health benefits. The study doesn't limit the use of alternative medicine to this specific population and shows that women, college students, former smokers and people who have undergone previous hospitalization are also using alternative medicine practices. The sheer holistic nature of alternative medicine is what draws people to it, but despite its widespread use and popularity, it remains relatively understudied.

Some of the most widely used alternative therapies in the US include biologically based practices, mind-body medicine, manipulative and body-based practices, and alternative herbal medicine, Ayurveda, naturopathy, homeopathy and energy medicine.

Alternative Medicine vs Conventional Medicine - Part 1

The term 'alternative medicine' that is so commonly used today is somewhat unsuitable since that would seem to indicate that it is a form of treatment departing from so-called 'traditional' scientific practices and is just a

possibility for a new treatment of disease. The truth is, so called 'alternative' medicine is the natural treatment of disease that was in effect in ancient times long before conventional medicine was ever introduced. Alternative medicine is traditional, whereas conventional

medicine is relatively new and not traditional. So conventional medicine should rightly be deemed 'alternative.'

Upon the introduction of conventional medicine, what is

now called alternative medicine was suppressed, insomuch

that many sufferers are very distrustful of the use of

ancient treatments because they have been made to believe

that such treatments are ineffectual or even dangerous.

Yet, many ancient practices as Chinese, water treatment,

herbal remedies, massage and Ayurveda (Indian medicine

believed to be the oldest and most complete medical system)

are still being practised with great results; and, in recent

times, other systems also based upon the ancient forms of

natural healing have emerged. These include such therapies

as homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic, aromatherapy,

nutritional medicine, naturopathic, and many other natural

therapies that have proved to support the natural healing

function of the body with excellent results.

In spite of this, there are persons who would prefer to suffer

than give such treatments a chance. However, when all else

fail, many of those same persons are now returning to such

therapies with the hope of finding relief.

Although there are different alternative therapies with

varying beliefs and techniques, there are common principles

under which they are all operating:

1. The body can heal itself naturally and remain stable.

2. Health problems can be contributed to factors of mind,

body and emotions.

3. It is more important to get to the root cause of an

illness and treat the whole person than to concentrate upon

symptoms only.

4. A person can contribute to his own healing if he pays more

attention to his health.

5. The same method of treatment cannot be suitable for

everyone since each person is unique in his physical, mental,

and spiritual build. This is why two persons may be diagnosed

with the same disease and the same level of illness, and one

survives and the other succumbs. Your mind can work wonders.

The main difference between so-called alternative medicine

and conventional medicine is that the latter is too concerned

with treating the symptoms of disease by scientific

techniques and technology instead of treating the whole person

and the cause of disease. On the other hand, alternative

medicine puts much emphasis upon the prevention of disease

(as mentioned above), and seeks to treat the whole person so

as to strengthen the immune system to bring about a sustained

healing.

Many diseases that have been deemed "incurable" are being

healed by natural 'alternative' means today but, unfortunately,

they have never been heard of by countless sufferers.

I enjoy making my own natural remedies from nature's herbs,

vitamins and nutrients. I have been doing this for years and

have always been quite healthy. You too can avoid the effects

of costly synthetic prescription drugs used as medicines. It

is up to you to stop poisoning yourself, maintain good health

and save.

This article is written for information only and is not

intended to suggest treatment of any disease. Information

contained herein is based on research I have done and just

want to share with interested persons. Anyone suffering from

a disease is advised to consult a recognized practitioner for

advice.

Alternative Medicine Brings Balance to the Old and New

Alternative medicine refers to the healing practices which according to how the modern western world defines it, do not use medical products and treatments that can be considered as standard care or conventional medicine. This includes acupuncture, yoga, meditation, traditional Chinese medicine, ayurveda, chiropractic, hypnosis, homeopathy, and diet- based therapies, among many others. Even though those referred to as alternative medicine have been around since ancient times and the discovery of what is called standard care and conventional medicine came thousand of years after, alternative medicine still has to be accepted as safe and useful.

Alternative medicine is now combined with complimentary medicine which refers to the treatments used in addition to conventional therapies prescribed by doctors such as massage. Complementary and alternative medicine or CAM is slowly being recognized by conventional doctors as a means to help patients with their treatments. Some medical schools have already included the study of nontraditional techniques in their curriculum. Once alternative therapies have proved effective, they are then combined with conventional care. This is called integrative medicine. This practice involves using conventional treatment with CAM such as eating food with omega-3 fatty acids to help keep the heart healthy other than taking the prescribed medicine.

Alternative medicine can be traced back thousands of years ago in Asian countries such as China and India. Alternative medicine which originated in India is called Ayurveda or ayurvedic medicine. This has been practiced for thousands of years now and continuously aid patients to balance the harmony of mind, soul and body which are believed to heal different ailments. Similarly in China, traditional Chinese medicine has been used for more than 5,000 years based on the concept of balance from the Taoist philosophy and Chinese culture. Meanwhile, Europe and other western countries have also used their own version of alternative medicine called naturopathy, herbalism and hydrotherapy. In the United States, for example, herbalism is the widely used alternative medicine especially by Native American Indians and those who cultivated plants.

Complementary and alternative therapies are classified into five major groups:

Whole medical systems - include Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda
Mind-body medicine - uses therapy in balancing the body, mind and spirit
Biological-based practices - used natural substances such as herbs, food, vitamins and other natural supplements
Manipulative and body-based practices - uses manipulations of body parts such as those done in chiropractic and massage therapies
Energy medicine - uses putative and verifiable energy fields called biofield and bioelectromagnetic-based therapies

Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Going to the doctor is not like it used to be. In olden times doctors visits were more personalized and in depth. Now traditional medicine is very impersonal and doctors send you home with up to 5 prescriptions that you need to start taking right away. The only problem is you will return next week because of all the side affects that you have from all the medicine the doctor prescribed you in the first place and your original problem still won't be solved. Unfortunately, the reason behind all the new prescriptions is because of all the kickbacks that doctors get for prescribing them. Although, these medications don't help the patients and will undoubtedly cause more symptoms. So many Americans have started looking towards complementary and alternative medicine.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a group of diverse medical practices that are not generally accepted by conventional medicine, conventional medicine being medicine practiced by an M.D., D.O., psychologist, registered nurse, or physical therapist. This group of medicine is continually changing and types of medicine are very broad, however the ultimate goal of this type of medicine is find whole body health and wellness. The principals and guidelines for each individual type of CAM although diverse are based on holistic properties, whereby treating the body as a whole and resolving the underlying problems are far more important in the long run rather than just reducing the symptoms.

CAM involves the connection between the mind and body and not only relieves symptoms but works to resolve the underlying problems as well. Although, used in conjunction with one another, complementary and alternative medicines are two completely different groups of medicine. Complementary medicine unlike its cohort is used in conjunction with traditional medicine. Therefore the treatment or medicine complements conventional means of resolving pain, disease or illness. Where as alternative medicine, is used in place of conventional medicine to promote self-healing, and preventative medicine.

In the past, CAM was not accepted due to its lack of scientific basis and evidence. However, because many CAM practices are deeply rooted in Eastern history and are based upon traditional medicine, folk knowledge, and spiritual beliefs people are now turning to this type of medicine. Not to mention that patients are seeing and feeling results from CAM. There is no greater influence than someone else's testimonial, which is causing the rise in CAM. Western medicine, although still hesitant, is just beginning to use some alternative medicines as complements to their conventional methods. Additionally insurances have turned the corner and started allowing several alternative medicines as part of their covered benefits. That's not to say that CAM is completely accepted by the medical community, it is a long way off. However it has opened the door for new approaches to healing some of which are old ideas with new methods.

Due to the diversity of available CAM's, it is easier to group them together to understand what type of medicine and treatment is rendered. The categories include natural products, mind-body medicine, and manipulative and body-based practices. Natural products include a variety of herbal medicines, vitamins, minerals and other "natural products". Products considered natural can include dietary supplementation, herbal or botanical, and probiotics. Mind-body medicine focuses on the connection between the mind and the body to heal and promote health. These practices include meditation, yoga, acupuncture, deep-breathing, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, and tai chi. Lastly manipulative and body-based practices focus on the body systems and their structures. Spinal manipulation from chiropractic care and massage therapy are two commonly used body-based practices.

Before you choose a CAM it is best to research and ask your friends and coworkers for suggestions. It is normal to be nervous or apprehensive because it is not mainstream, however with the popularity and growth that it continues to receive, CAM's are the next group of conventional medicine.

Alternative Medicine for Mental Wellbeing

Some recent healthcare studies* suggest that alternative medicine is growing in popularity. One of the many reasons for this increase is due in part to the fact that most alternative healthcare therapies are often non-invasive, with little or no side effects.

For example, herbal medicine like St. John's wort was scientifically studied* in Europe, presenting positive findings for its effectiveness on the treatment of certain cases of depression. However, large pharmaceutical company, Pfizer Inc., refuted these studies by carrying out an independent study on the herb. The difference, though, between this alternative medicine in comparison to drugs like Prozac, is the potentially lethal side effects; which have made recent headlines in anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drug lawsuits.

Complementary and alternative medicine like acupuncture is also making leeway in the field of mental healthcare. In a small pilot study* carried out by researchers, acupuncture was used as a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy on patients suffering from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Interestingly enough, research found that acupuncture may be effective in helping people, who have PTSD.

Another form of alternative medicine, believe it or not, is meditation. Studies* found that individuals who practice meditation are more proficient at recognizing and processing information. Does this mean that meditation gurus are more intellectual? No, it simply means that most individuals who practice meditation have an improved sensory-cognitive perception, or heightened sense of awareness. Perhaps alternative therapy like meditation may one day find its way into educational facilities across the country; which could potentially lead to more positive learning environments, as well as a reduction in attention deficit disorders?

Persons suffering from psychiatric problems like bipolar disorder may also find relief from complementary and alternative medicine like Omega-3 fatty acids. Because Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients, researchers studied this supplement to determine its effectiveness on certain mental health conditions. With promising results of the (researcher's) meta-analysis, the future is looking brighter for those plagued with depression or bipolar disorder; and alternative health treatment like Omega-3 fatty acids has the potential to play an important, complementary role in helping to treat these disorders.

Intrigued by alternative medicine? You're not alone. Over 74 percent of US adults have used complementary and/or alternative medicine* at some time in their lives. This is also one of the many reasons why natural health and alternative healing schools have begun popping up all across the country.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding schools in alternative medicine, let professional training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Alternative Medicine - The Healthy Choice

Alternative and Conventional Medicines are the two main systems of healing in use today and the utmost caution should be taken to choose wisely.

Being healthy is of crucial importance in the life of everyone. I do not believe that there is anyone who relishes the anguish of disease. Without health you cannot function properly in any area of your life.

Whether enjoying the normal faculties of life or mentally unbalanced, every person would rather be perfectly healthy than endure the tortures of pain, sickness and disease, but there comes a time when we must seek medical help.

It is unfortunate that instead of healing the sick, very often some medicines interfere with the natural process of healing, resulting in additional suffering and further deterioration of health.

In ancient times, illness was cured by the use of herbs and other natural therapies which always proved very effective. Today, those same therapies as well as modern discoveres based on those of ancient times are referred to as alternative medicine and the public has been brainwashed

into believing that the treatments are worthless; yet, many diseases that have been deemed 'incurable' are being healed by alternative means but, unfortunately, these cures have never been heard of by countless sufferers.

What is called conventional medicine (also referred to as mainstream, standard, allopathic or orthodox medicine), is man-made synthetic drugs that were not in existence in ancient times. Interestingly, so many diseases were not around in those days as there are today.

The main difference between the two systems is that alternative medicine is concerned about the prevention of disease and pays attention to and deals with the cause by treating the body as a whole. It focuses on preventing disease before it starts. It views the presence of disease as an imbalance of the emotional, mental and physical state of a person and endeavors to support and strengthen the immune system by natural means.

Alternative medicine contends that the body is naturally able to heal itself and remain stable - known in medicine as homeostasis.

On the other hand, conventional medicine is not concerned with preventing disease but rather with using synthetic drugs to cure an already established ailment. It is more interested in treating just the symptoms of disease by scientific techniques and technology instead of treating the whole person.

Many conventional drugs are said to have the potential to damage the liver and kidneys, and cause mental depression, heart falure, cancer and other adverse side effects. Now, if that is so, why are they still being manufactured and sold to the public? Where is the concern for public health and safety?

Note that since the introduction of conventional medicine, instead of there being greater relief from illness, there has been an exponential surge of diseases wreaking havoc in the lives of unsuspecting mortals. Why is this so?

If conventional medicine were the answer to health problems, why are there so many more diseases prevalent today? The interesting thing is that a name is readily given to each new disease and some form of synthetic remedy is quickly manufactured for sale!

Conventional medicine has been so well advertised that the public is convinced that it is the only way they can get relief from devastating illnesses. They jump at the announcement of any new supposedly super healing conventional medicine and with no hesitation embark upon treating themselves. This is especially so in the case of weight loss.

The sad thing is that no real cure is realized from these, whereas there are natural remedies that have been proven to cure. I can personally attest to certain cures that I have experienced through the use of natural remedies.

It is well known that some drug manufacturers have had to withdraw their dangerous medication because of the likelihood of patients suffering heart attack and stroke. Most synthetic drugs, if not all, have dangerous side effects of which the public is unaware. Some are very detrimental to unborn babies. So why are these drugs still being sold and at such exorbitant prices?

The general public is not sufficiently made aware of the dangers of conventional drugs. For obvious reasons, no attempt to do so is made by those who should educate the unwary and encourage the use of alternative medicine.

Obviously, if disease is prevented by natural means before resulting in the breakdown of the immune system which is the body's mechanism of defence against illness, serious diseases such as cancer and other so-called incurable diseases would be revented, and so there would be little need for the administration of expensive conventional medicine since that would be necessary only in case of surgery and other traumatic conditions.

Sad to say, it is reported that nutritional supplements as well as some alternative medicines packaged by some unscrupulous manufacturers are not quite what their labels indicate, and that the potency is far below what is required to be effective. This is not to suggest that they are toxic, but rather that they are not quite as effective as they should be.

If this is so, my personal feeling is that such persons should be exposed and their names posted in full view for all to see. This should curb that undesirable practice. One must therefore be very cautious when choosing nutritional supplements as well as alternative medicines.

Another point that I think worthy of note is about products so readily put on the skin. Most of them are formulated with harmful synthetic substances that get into the blood stream and invariably cause dangerous side effects. As it is said, what you would not eat, you should not put on your skin.

Remember that the skin absorbs and cannot differentiate between synthetic chemicals and natural substances. You may not see the adverse effects now, but years later your skin would speak for itself. You do not want to look older than your age, do you? Then do not poison yourself with the topical application of toxic skin products.

No one should be so busy so as not be able to find time to learn about the natural substances that they could take to protect their own bodies and prevent diseases. Many thousands of persons might have been alive today if only they had known, and had been encouraged to use natural remedies.

I enjoy reading to find out about ancient formulas and treatments that have resurfaced today, as well as new discoveries of natural healing methods and remedies that are gaining momentum amongst health conscious persons.

Ï have collected lots of information on herbal remedies. Among them are such topics as heart health the natural way, aromatherapy essential oils, homeopathy, beautiful skin care, skin diseases, healing for conditions such as acne, hemorrhoids, eczema, etc., weightloss, and many other natural health remedies and detailed information on how to make your own from nature's herbs, vitamins and nutrients.

Many persons seem to be convinced that natural remedies made by God do not have the efficacy of the synthetic remedies made by man!

God who made this world has said "the leaves of the trees for healing of the nations." God is truth and cannot lie. Isn't it time that we took Him at his word?

Why should we put our trust in Satan and his lies and put no confidence in God and His truth?

Since there seems to be no confidence in what God has made, Why don't we make our own water, sunshine, trees, and fresh air? Why do we walk upon God's earth? We should make our own basic items to concoct synthetic remedies instead of corrupting the things that God has made.

You can seek relief from disease either through natural alternative medicine by which you can maintain good health and save; or, through conventional medicine with its ill effects of costly synthetic prescription drugs at the risk of further deterioration of your health. It is up to you to prevent poisoning yourself, avoid unnecessary pain and suffering, and be healthy.

Keep this in mind:

If you really want to fight disease,

Natural Medicine is the Healthy Choice;

But, if you'd rather be deceased,

Synthetic Medicine might be the Deadly Choice!!

A Quick Comparison of Conventional Medicines and Alternative Medicines

The term "conventional medicine" refers to medicine practiced by medical doctors and doctors of osteopath. Alternative medicine is a system of theory and practice used by many individual cultures around the world. There are several differences in conventional and alternative medicines, but there are some practitioners that use them together.

Promoting Good Health

The emphasis in alternative medicine is good health and prevention of disease. With alternative medicine, an individual is using natural remedies to build up the immune system to fight off infection and diseases. Each person is treated as an individual. Then, a specialized treatment is used for their needs. Through extensive questioning and diagnostic tools, the practitioner works to determine the cause of health problems. If there are underlying factors influencing your health, they will work to find the problem. Instead of using the same treatment on everyone with a common symptom, they try to find the hidden cause and treat it.

Different Methods

There are several different kinds of alternative medicines: homeopath, osteopath, chiropractic, herbal medicine, massage and acupuncture. Alternative medicine practitioners usually have a quality education with degree-level exams and monitored evaluation. Other therapies not as common are reflexology and aromatherapy, which use less invasive methods. These are more independent practitioners sometimes using methods developed on their own.

The purpose is to stimulate the body's healing process. Instead of trying to rid the body of a disease or symptom, the whole body is treated, and the cause is addressed. That is why a whole regimen is sometimes prescribed. This could be dietary changes, exercises, and an herbal remedy. By treating the cause, you have more chance of a complete cure. In most cases, these treatments are not as costly as conventional medicines.

Widely Used

Many companies offer alternative medicine in their healthcare packages. In recent years, Americans have spent billions of dollars on unconventional medicine, doctor's visits, and herbal remedies. As a result, many drug stores and chain stores are stocking natural remedies.

Conventional Treatments

In conventional medicine, the symptoms are attacked aggressively with surgery and drugs. Instead of the whole body being considered at one time, each organ is attended separately. Medical schools are divided into organ specific departments where the organs are learned about separately, and are not taught as being related to each other. This works fine for emergency and trauma treatments, but does not promote better health over all.

The treatments used in conventional medicine are the result of scientific research and successful results. Many doctors are convinced that these are the best for their patients. But in most cases, they will treat everyone with the same treatment when they could have different factors affecting their health. Many doctors specialize in one area and only know that one field well.

Using Both Methods

Some doctors use alternative medicine in a complimentary manner along with their conventional treatments. Several medical schools and renowned hospitals are offering courses and clinics using alternative medicines. This is also common in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Most people assume that only the latest high-tech treatments will be affective, but sometimes these are not as tried and proven as the old time remedies passed down over the years. The best thing to do is gather as much information as you can before you make a judgment. Many times people are skeptical or fearful because they do not know the facts.

Being Prepared

Though our bodies are very resilient and have the amazing ability to heal their selves, there are times that we will need help. It is best to be informed about both conventional and alternative medicines when the time comes to make a choice.

What You Should Know in Regards to the Alternative Medicine Foundation

Modern medicine continues to get more and more complicated by the day, and this is resulting in a growing interest in the effective, simpler medical practices of the past. Herbs, massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy - all of these fall under the umbrella of alternative medicine. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of misinformation and groundless fears about alternative treatments, as well as a lack of regulations in comparison to modern medicine. The not for profit Alternative Medicine Foundation seeks to provide fact-based information for those interested in learning more about alternative medicine treatments. This foundation does not intend to replace modern medicine with alternative treatments - they are hoping to combine the best of both practices.

A Brief History Lesson

The Alternative Medicine Foundation was founded in 1998 in Bethesda, Maryland. It began as a response to the growing demand for gentler and safer treatments than were being provided by modern medicine. They hope to educate the public about alternative treatments, and they also seek to educate the western medical field as well.

Traditional medicine is a big business these days, and as such they don't always appreciate competition. As Westerners have demanded more access to alternative treatments, insurance companies have responded by agreeing to cover some procedures, including hypnotherapy and acupuncture. Check with your health insurance company to see which, if any, alternative treatments are covered.

The Alternative Medicine Foundation also publishes The Townsend Letter, which is a journal about - you guessed it - different alternative treatments. Contributors to the journal include scientists, doctors, and those who are active participants in this particular field. It does not seek to push their therapies on anyone, simply to suggest those that may benefit from certain these treatments.

Best of All - It's Free!

Seven Advantages of Alternative Medicine

There are so many advantages of alternative medicine over modern medicine, that I want to spend a few moments looking at possible reasons why these are kept so well hidden, at least from the public eye.

If you were to listen to the media of the so called 'free' (western) world, you could be forgiven in thinking that there is no scientific evidence for, let alone advantages of alternative medicine. You would be convinced that modern medicine was the way to go.

But, according to Reporters Without Borders (for press freedom), the so called 'free' world doesn't have free press. Britain only rates 23rd, Australia ranks lower at 28th and America trails at a miserable 36th for the 2008 figures.

So can you believe all you read?

Reporters Without Borders say "It is not economic prosperity, but peace that guarantees press freedom."

So economic prosperity actually makes us less free. How? Well, one example is if a prosperous company spends millions of dollars advertising in say, a newspaper, the editors are going to be very reluctant to print anything controversial about said company.

Next time you open your newspaper or switch on a radio or TV channel with advertising, check out the biggest advertisers.

That may give you some idea why alternative medicine is not as popular as one would expect from the documented results.

There's a saying that all truth goes through three phases.

1. It is ridiculed.

2. It is violently opposed.

3. It is accepted as being self evident.

Judging by the media publications in 2008 at least in some parts of Europe, I think the west has now advanced to stage two!

So lets look at some of the advantages of alternative medicine. As my expertise lies with homoeopathy, I'm going to be focusing on this, but some of the reasons will apply to other alternative therapies too.

1. There are no side effects. This is because alternative medicine works WITH the body, not in suppressing symptoms, as modern medicine does.

2. Medicines are cost effective. This means they are generally affordable by even the most financially compromised families.

3. Alternative medicines are generally 'green'. By that I mean that they use natural substances processed simply. No high tech manufacturing processes which use hazardous and polluting chemicals or carbon polluting energy.

4. Substances or ingredients of 'complexes' are readily available, so you can even grow some of your own medicines, allowing you to keep control of the whole process. No secrecy or patents here!

5. Alternative medicines don't just heal ailments. In the process, they allow for growth. In homoeopathy we see children putting on a growth spurt after they recover from a naturally treated disease. This doesn't happen with a medically treated disease. Rather, it appears to hold the child back.

6. Alternative medicine recognizes the true nature of disease and sickness. That it is necessary for a growing child to experience as only this experience allows the immune system to develop into a healthy one by adulthood. It's a bit like learning to ride a bicycle. You need to practice before you can ride properly.

7. Alternative medicine recognizes that physical symptoms only develop when you ignore the mental and emotional signs and symptoms. Which allows you the freedom to deal with these problems as they arise, and so never develop physical symptoms.

When you can fully grasp the advantages of alternative medicine, it truly blows your socks off. No longer are you kept in a state of fear by what might happen. Instead, you know your healthy immune system will work well for you, and that when it struggles, you will know.

No more scare mongering of impending pandemics for you! Because you are now in control of your life and your health, and as you are fully aware of the advantages of alternative medicine, you can be at peace with the world.

Complimentary Alternative Medicine Combined With Traditional Medicine

For years, modern medicine was the only choice available for patients, as alternative treatments were not accepted or offered as a viable form of medical treatment. Modern medicine has now become more open minded and accepting of the use of alternative medicine treatments. Now, alternative medicine doctors and western medical doctors work together to assist their patients. This practice is called complimentary alternative medicine, and it is becoming more and more popular.

Complimentary Alternative Medicine:  Working in a Traditional Medicine Setting

You may have used some complimentary alternative medicine treatments without even knowing it. Aromatherapy is an alternative treatment that relies on the sense of smell to trigger a healing response within the body. Aromatherapy is used in many physician's offices and also in recovery rooms. Different scents will trigger different responses. For example, vanilla is often used for it's relaxing effects. This is a non-intrusive type of alternative treatment that is easy to do, even at home.

Many patients are surprised to learn that Chiropractic medicine is actually a form of complementary alternative medicine. Chiropractors can be found anywhere and will work with traditional doctors to help ensure a total body approach to healing. Osteopathic medicine is another form of complimentary alternative treatment that uses a whole body approach by focusing on the importance of one body functions affect on other functions. Both of these practices are known to be reputable and safe.

Massage may be the most common form of complimentary alternative treatment, as patients with muscle problems are commonly referred to a massage therapist. Massage works well when combined with traditional medical practices. During massage a patient's entire well-being is emphasized and kept in focus.

Some patients use homeopathic treatments along with traditional medicine interventions. The primary care physician should always be told of any complementary alternative treatment you are receiving. Homeopathy involves treating the underlying cause of an ailment, and not just the symptoms. For allergies, a patient may be given small doses of the allergen so that their body can build up a tolerance. This is continued until there is no more negative reaction to the allergen. This is a popular treatment choice, as many people have found success from using it.

Complimentary alternative medicine is believed to work well with more modern medical practices. For many doctors, using alternative treatments is a way to supplement their own treatments in order to assist a person in achieving total mind and body wellness.

Cutting Edge In Medicine- The Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is termed as informal, supplementary, and complementary medicine. Alternative medicine is lot different from conventional medical approaches and mainly prescribed instead of the regular treatments in allopathic field. The treatments, which are included in alternative medicine, are herbal medicine, homeopathy, Chinese, non-medical massage therapy, hypnosis, chelation therapy, acupuncture, tribal-traditional medicine, Christian Science, and ayurvedic.

Conventional allopathic doctors are preferred in any case of health problem for any person from their childhood. Though alternative medicine has gained popularity and gained trust by many people still confusion about its advantages and disadvantages are questioned.

However, these days there are various rigorous researches on alternative and complementary medicine are carried out and its efficiency is proved. There is a future in alternative medicine.

The usage of this type of method is done by two following methods:

Combinations of both are also in use. For. E.g. In addition to the conventional prescription medicine a nice Tai massage is proved to do wonders. The second method is the alternative approaches are used instead of conventional method. i.e. alternative method alone is prescribed for any treatment.

In Alternative medicine, there are few philosophies, which are observed. They are:

Body with little therapy and medicine can heal by itself. Always a product should enhance the bodies healing capacity. Prevention is better than cure. A general check up should always be done periodically to keep a check before anything goes wrong. Bodies responding capacity to any treatment is important then the treatment itself.

Few Alternative medicine/ complementary medicines are:

Mind and body technique: In this therapy combination of mind and body is the key. In alternative medicine harmony between mind and body are necessary to be fit. This connection method includes in prayer, hypnosis, yoga, biofeedback, meditation, relaxation therapies, music, dance etc.

Dietary supplements and herbs: In this treatment natural products are used. Herbs and dietary supplements like ginkgo, enchinacea, ginseng, same, glucosamine sulfate, selenium are prescribed in the form of oils, tea, powder, syrup, tablet and capsule. This method is in practice for almost thousand and above years.

Healing system: it is a combination of many therapy and practice/ remedy. It has its base revolving around the presence of healing energy in the body and the power of natural products used for curing. Healing system is the base in ayurveda, homeopathy, and naturopathy. Mostly countries like India, china, pacific, Asia, and Tibet follow this method of healing therapy.

The Popularity Behind Alternative Medicine

If you're hearing about it for the first time, you may be surprised when you realize just how popular alternative medicines is. This incredible leap from being rather taboo to becoming an incredibly popular and fashionable form of healing has surprised both Western doctors and medical researchers. In a world that's been dominated by Western conventional medicine for decades, the sudden rise of alternative medicine was something worth paying attention to. So why did alternative medicine become so popular?

First, it has to do with its history. Almost all forms of alternative medicines have a rich long history rooted in spirituality, tradition, and ancient cultures. Many people are attracted to this history. The fact that many people and entire societies have been using these methods for healing for thousands of years has a certain charm and appeal to it. People believe that the traditions would not have been kept for as long as they have if the methods didn't work.

Next, patients like that most alternative medicine practices are non-invasive. There are millions of people who are afraid of surgery, while there are tons of others who don't enjoy certain procedures. One of the facets of alternative medicine is that all procedures and practices are non-invasive. This appeals to a lot of people because it alleviates fears. The other plus is that these procedures are easier to do, and there is no recovery time from them.

Third, it's appealing because its natural. All the medicine, supplement, and procedures follow natural processes or are derived from natural elements and products. A good example is found in herbal medicine, which is one of the many forms of alternative medicine. Herbal medicine attempts to cure and alleviate illnesses and common everyday ailments through teas and natural supplements. Having a completely natural manner of healing means no synthesized elements or extracts, which means less complications within the body.

Another perk many people enjoy is that many of the alternative herbal medicine practices can be done at home. This gives many people the comfort of being in their own homes while still receiving treatment, either through an alternative health care provider or by administering the treatment themselves. This is actually very easy because many times treatment can involve teas, water, massages, meditation, and other practices that can be done anywhere.

Finally, people enjoy alternative medicine because its cheaper than Western conventional medicine. Most of the time, Western medicine goes through various expensive procedures and this is often coupled with pricey medication. Alternative medicine, on the other hand because it is natural, non-invasive, and can be done on your own reduces cost of care and healing significantly.

These are just four reasons as to why alternative medicine is now so popular. There are other reasons behind its popularity, the most important one being its effectiveness for many ailments. It can sometimes be the best way to treat and help our many medical health problems.

Alternative Medicine - The Road to Here

It wasn't too long ago that doctors who used alternative medicine methods of healing patients were labeled quacks. In fact, I remember the funny looks from fellow colleagues when I told them I thought herbal products and supplements had a lot to offer traditional medicine!

In addition, years ago, people who turned to vitamin and mineral supplements as prevention against illness were labeled 'health nuts'. Today, however, these same people are said to practice proactive wellness as nutritional healing ideas have become widespread.

In fact, despite all the TV ads for drugs, more and more of my patients are opening up to the idea that popping a prescription pill for what ails them might not be the only answer. As I always tell them, there are many natural remedies that can be tried before resorting to drugs or surgery.

If you're a newcomer to alternative medicine, I'd like to share with you a little history of the field. Then, I'd like to tell you a little about some successful alternative healing remedies as well as a little about the future of alternative medicine.

Allopathic vs. Naturopathic

What we refer to as alternative medicine practices today were, and still are, traditional medicine in China, India, the Middle East, and Europe. Did you know that herbal and homeopathic medicine were also the cornerstones of the American Popular Health Movement in the 1830s-50's? That's right! Osteopathic and chiropractic medicine also developed around the same time.

By 1849, however, the popular uses of herbal and homeopathic remedies were deemed quackery by the American Medical Association which had formed two years earlier. Several years later, chiropractic also fell out of favor. Treating patients with prescription drugs, or allopathic medicine, set the standard of health care in the U.S. for decades to follow.

Now, in 2010, the pendulum is swinging back to the popular health practices of over 150 years ago! With the dangerous, sometimes life-threatening, side effects of prescription drugs, the cost of medical care today, and insurance issues, people have begun to reconsider alternatives.

The renewed interest in herbal, homeopathic, midwifery, chiropractic, and acupuncture has skyrocketed in the U.S. today. In addition, cutting-edge research into energy, and mind/body healing, is also commanding attention around the world.

Even traditional medical doctors (M.D.'s) are integrating natural-based healing remedies into their practices, and a whole new field of medicine called Integrative Medicine has formed.

Now, let me explain to you a little more about each of the more common alternative practices so you can better understand what they are and how they function:

?Herbal - made from natural, plant-based substances. These products have been used safely for centuries by the Chinese, Indians, and Native Americans. They've been a boon to women in safe hormone replacement therapy and men's prostate health with saw palmetto and lycopene. However, do consult a naturopathic or integrative medicine doctor before trying to treat an illness with herbal preparations.

?Homeopathic - based on the "law of similars", a minute quantity of medicine is diluted many times and used, much like a vaccine, to create a reaction that stimulates the body to heal itself. Success with allergies, pain, mineral imbalance-based illnesses, and more, has been achieved with homeopathy. Consult a homeopathic for proper use.

?Chiropractic - based on the principle of proper alignment of the skeletal structure so that nerves coming off the spinal cord are not pinched. These nerves are then able to properly feed, or enervate, different parts of the body to prevent and correct disease states. Back and neck pain as well as nerve compression issues have had success with chiropractic.

?Acupuncture, acupressure, and reflexology - based on the concept of qi energy and the belief that illness occurs when this energy does not flow correctly. Certain meridians on the body are manipulated by inserting hair-thin needles into the skin, or using fingertips to press on these areas. Addiction (smoking, drugs, alcohol, weight), chronic pain, nervous tics, have all been treated successfully. Reiki is another similar practice that involves manipulating the electrical field that surrounds humans with a practitioner's hands.

?Energy Medicine - Mechanical energy, sound, heat, electricity, magnetism, light (ultraviolet, infrared, laser), plasma (color) therapies modalities have been used for the past 100 years as a "fringe" treatment. Today, mainstream medicine uses ultraviolet light for skin problems; lasers in surgery; infrared (and Far InfraRed) light to reduce inflammation and pain; sound is also used to break up kidney stones. The future of energy healing is wide open and mind-boggling.

?Anti-Aging Medicine -based on the principle of replacing nutrients that deplete with age which start the deterioration we call aging. Focuses on supplementation with anti-oxidants, etc, to keep cells regenerating at their youthful levels. New paths involve the study of telomere lengthening. Telomeres are human DNA structures that shorten each time a cell replicates until they die. Supplementing with the building blocks of telomeres, can keep their youthful length and you healthy, much longer.

?Mind/Body Healing - based on the principle that the mind can influence healing in the body through specific, directed thoughts; it is what biofeedback is based on. It has been very successful with controlling pain and certain psychological disorders.

There you have the basics of what alternative medicine is. The future is blindingly bright with all the advances it continues to make on a daily basis. In the near future, I feel that most of what we refer to as alternative medicine today will be mainstream medicine tomorrow. In 2010, it's traveled a long road to get where it is today and its potential for human healing is enormous!

Alternative Medicine As An Effective Alternative to Conventional Medicine

As we progress into the twenty-first century, we have made many inroads and advances in medicine due to new discoveries in chemistry, biology, and physics. Conventional medicine, our generally accepted system of medical knowledge, is practiced almost exclusively in the United States and abroad. Using this system, medical doctors and other health professionals treat diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery. Conventional medicine is also known as allopathic, mainstream, modern or Western medicine.

As a technically advanced society, we have become proud of our achievements in science but modern medicine has yet to solve our health problems. There are several diseases such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and a wide variety of serious as well as chronic diseases where a cure has been pending for many, many years. Those who are suffering with incurable illnesses, are questioning the true advancement of modern medicine, and wondering, considering the modern innovations in science, if it has really made so much progress at all. We do have everyday experience of the wonders of medical science in the areas of nuclear and emergency medicine, immunology, surgery and medical testing, and certainly these systems are extremely important, but actual disease prevention and treatment for many chronic diseases is still eluding the modern medical establishment.

There has existed a driving force behind alternative medicine for centuries, and the motivation has been to heal others. Although practitioners of alternative medicine and their patients are reporting effective results, there are some persons who propose that such medicine is fraudulent, and is being practiced by insufficient or under/uneducated persons. This certainly could be true is some cases, but has also been true regarding conventional medical doctors who have had their licenses revoked for negligence or incompetence.

If doctors were not sexists, then there would be no need to offer seminars on how to sensitively handle a woman's pelvic exam in a "non-sexist manner." This type of mentality is one of many reasons women especially, and men also, are turning away from their medical doctors and enlisting the help of alternative practitioners. Michael P. Annavi, Ph.D., in his essay on allopathic authority, entitled Scraps from the Table of Allopathic Power, states that "the allopathic medical industry has created a process of invalidation that promotes the ideology that knowledge is real only if it is established within this tautological framework of European thought".

The difficulty in establishing the practices and rights of non-traditional health professionals has been thwarted for the past two centuries from those who advocate the practice of scientifically validated medicine, from the traditional medical societies, and, of course, from the medical doctors themselves. This is nothing more than systematic prejudice and racism, especially in regard to the Chinese and E. Indian medical practitioners of acupuncture and Ayurvedic medicine.

Larry Altshuler, M.D., in his book Balanced Healing, states that many alternative healing methods are simply more effective than conventional treatments are for certain conditions, and many treatments have fewer side effects and potential dangerss. Throughout his book, Dr. Altshuler discusses natural treatments he has used effectively on patients for many years. A proponent of preventative and natural medicine, Dr. Altshuler explains, for example, that there is a strong correlation between diabetes and obesity. As a truly alternative medical treatment, firstly he mentions that patients should completely avoid alcohol, which is very high in sugar content. Secondly he says to eat a balanced diet, low in refined sugars, fat, and animal products, and high in plant fiber. Thirdly he recommends the vitamins, nutrients and herbs necessary for supplementation. Lastly he recommends getting acupuncture treatments.

In the documentary film, The True Story of The Bridge on the River Kwai, Otto C. Schwarth, an American P.O.W., forced to work on the railway between Burma and Thailand during World War II, described how hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war, British and American, sick and dying of various diseases, were treated by a handful of physicians. In his interview, Mr. Schwarth, then in his eighties, recalled: "The Americans were forever grateful to Dutch medical doctor Henry Hecking. Dr. Hecking was born and raised in Indonesia by his grandmother who was an herbalist. He was our savior, actually, because he knew all the local herbs. Our group ended up having the lowest death rate on the line.

Michael Wayne, Ph.D., author of Quantum Integral Medicine, explains in his interview with Acupuncture Today: This biomedicine (conventional medicine) has been based on a model on linear determination and reductionism - approaches that see the world in very black and white terms. This approach has gotten our selves into a lot of trouble, not only with its approach to the human body, but also with its approach to solving world problems. It is very cause-and-effect oriented and is always looking to find the one ultimate cause that created the dilemma (par. 3). Modern medical science has denied the larger picture of health and healing, being induced by corporate influence and profiteering. We are presently seeing the outcomes of such corruption and greed - like war in the Mid East in an attempt to monopolize oil reserves, global warming along with the melting of the polar ice caps, and worldwide economic collapse.

It has also become an amusement of some medical doctors to criticize natural medicine and its practitioners. In an interview with an Orthopedic Surgeon in Fresno, CA (who preferred to keep his name anonymous), revealed that chiropractors are referred to, in the conservative medical world, as "psuedo-doctors." In the early twentieth century the medical establishment fought against the profession of Chiropractic, saying that due to public welfare and protection, these types of alternative medical practitioners should not be licensed. We find that it was actually due to economic self-interest and not public welfare, or as Chiropractors state "the ermine gloves of altruism frequently conceal the brass knuckles of greed" (Whorton 138). Plainly speaking, the medical profession does not want to share its economic benefits with other medicine men. Hippocrates was also considered a heretic or "quack" of his time because the medical thinking of his day was that disease and recovery were caused or influenced by gods and demons.. Hippocrates (born 460 BC) is considered the father of Western allopathic medicine. He is credited with greatly advancing the systematic study of clinical medicine, summing up the medical knowledge of previous schools, and prescribing practices for physicians.

Twentieth-century medicine has made incredible inroads of discovery including nuclear technology for diagnosis and treatment. Although conventional medicine has made a great deal of scientific advancement, many people are still suffering from chronic debilitating diseases and incurable diseases. Allopathic medicine has hundred years of research and discovery, but does not seem to be making valuable and affordable solutions as we progress into the twenty-first century. The cost of medical treatment is staggeringly high, especially for diagnostic testing and hospitals visits. Medical practitioners are concerned not only with there own economic progress, but keeping at bay those who are not deemed worthy of the title Medical Doctor or M.D. In ancient China, the doctor was not paid for their services if a person became ill. They were only compensated for keeping patrons healthy via advice on diet, nutrition and exercise. They prescribed herbal medicines, not only for illness but for preventative health as well, so it was the healthy that supported the Chinese practitioner and not the sick. Unfortunately, in our modern society, it is the sick that provide the practitioner with a healthy income.

A new model of understanding in medicine needs to be incorporated into the existing allopathic model. Because of the growing popularity and effectiveness of Alternative Medicine, practitioners may eventually be given their deserved place in medical society. The incorporation of alternative medical practices into the existing model of conventional Western medicine, including the training of new medical doctors, is now called Complimentary Medicine. In order to solve our health problems, this modern paradigm for treatment in medicine must be promoted. This can only truly emerge when bias, self-interest, greed and discrimination is discarded and diverse medical knowledge is promoted and shared, not only between university trained scientists and medical doctors, but amongst alternative practitioners, philosophers, metaphysicians, and other intelligentsia of society as well. With the integration of alternative medicine with conventional medicine, we hope to see a model that focuses on health and healing, instead of illness and economic benefit. As more states license N.D.'s (naturopathic physicians), seeing them should be as commonplace as visiting your allopathic medical doctor. This could become the new ideal for medicine and health in the twenty-first century and beyond. We also look forward to the day when labels such as quack or pseudo-doctor will disappear along with other biased subjective judgments.

Up to a century ago, the common person thought it was impossible to fly, but after discovering the natural laws of aerodynamics, we can routinely fly into outer space. In his film, Galileo, Bertolt Brecht's historically depicts the life of Galileo Galilei. In the seventeenth century, Galileo, at the risk of persecution and death, proved through the study of cosmology and by using the foundation of mathematics, that the sun was the center of the heavens, and not the earth. In the same way, by using the natural ideals and foundations of medical knowledge, we will begin to make new and future discoveries in health and healing.

Alternative Medicine Schools: A Renewed Interest

With the renewed interest in alternative medicine, students and adult learners are flocking to alternative medicine schools to gain an educational edge in this surging health industry.

Today, students may choose from a vast variety of alternative medicine courses and degree programs that not only involve holistic healing but also in-depth studies in philosophy; botanical medicine; naturopathic medicine; communications; Oriental medicine; medical biochemistry; homeopathic medicine; self-healing; nutrition and detoxification; immunology; macronutrients; physical medicine; Chinese Medicine; and many more diverse classes.

Because alternative medicine schools do teach in an assortment of topics, students quickly learn that coursework may entail complete instruction in a great diversity of health care studies including but not limited to endocrinology; neurology; pharmacology; pulmonology; geriatrics; obstetrics; and most other health practices as well.

While there are many alternative medicine schools available to prospective students, it is important to take an in-depth and conscious review of what interests you the most: Is a degree in naturopathy something you'd like to pursue? Perhaps you're more focused on Herbal Medicine? Aromatherapy? Chinese Medicine? Osteopathy? Maybe, you'd like to become a practicing Chiropractor or Acupuncturist? You see, the limits of an alternative medicine education are really only confined to what educational objective you'd like to reach.

At any rate, with the vast career opportunities that are readily available to graduates of alternative medicine schools, it is essential that prospective alternative medicine health practitioners attain the appropriate level of education, training, *certification and licensure to succeed. *(If applicable, please review school curriculums for more in-depth information.)

Alternative Medicine Programs in America

Find Alternative Medicine Programs in the United States and Canada. With the phenomenal expansion of complementary and holistic therapies, there are growing numbers of healing arts schools that now offer alternative medicine programs to both practitioners and prospective students searching for unique career-training opportunities.

Of the numerous alternative medicine programs - massage therapy, holistic health, energy healing, and nutritional consulting are some of the more popular academic programs available today. However, more comprehensive alternative medicine programs in chiropractic, naturopathy and Oriental medicine are gaining leeway in the educational industry as well.

For example, alternative medicine programs in herbology entail studies in both Eastern and Western medicine principles with an emphasis on botany, medicinal plants, herbal pharmacy, and more. Depending on the healing arts school in which you enroll, more advanced training in Chinese herbal medicine may be available. As well, there are several alternative medicine programs at acupuncture schools and naturopathy schools with curricula that include in-depth studies in herbal medicine.

Other alternative medicine programs, like massage therapy and other bodywork training can be completed in less than a year's time. In many cases, these natural healing courses are comprised of 500 training hours; however, some may well exceed 1,000 hours. Students enrolled in bodywork programs gain hands-on instruction in various massage modalities; including Swedish massage, sports massage and deep tissue massage.

Alternative medicine programs in holistic health prepare candidates for careers as holistic health practitioners. In this field of study, students gain practical training in mind/body/spirit medicines including Ayurveda, energy healing therapies, intuitive healing, aromatherapy, herbology, hypnotherapy and/or NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), and massage techniques, among others.

Homeopathy is another subject that is avidly taught in alternative medicine programs in both naturopathic schools and homeopathic schools. Believing in the theory that "like treats like," homeopathy is a medicine that is based on the law of similars, and students who participate in this program learn about homeopathic pharmacy, Hering's Law, materia medica, and other related subject matter.

Whether individuals choose to enhance already-established healthcare services, or are primarily interested in gaining entry-level positions in the alternative healthcare industry, completing one or more alternative medicine programs can help to improve prospective career outlook as well as giving successful candidates the skills and knowledge necessary to help in healing.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding alternative medicine programs, let professional training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore career school programs near you.

Trying Alternative Medicine For Dogs

Just like human medicine, veterinary medicine has been in a constant flux the past years and decades. With new ideas and perspectives, new ways and means have been found for the treatment and care of our beloved dogs. More options are available and each offers a different technique, philosophy and methods. In fact, alternative medicine for dogs has been developed to challenge the traditional veterinary medicine associated with clinics, vaccines and pharmaceutical companies. The following are areas by which alternative veterinary medicine has tried to provide for new options and possibilities:

1. The first is the idea and concept of vaccines where alternative medicine for dogs has suggested that instead of vaccinations, what can be used are nosodes, which is a homeopathic mixture. This however has not been tried and proven on scientific grounds on whether it really prevents infectious diseases. But studies have been published that suggest that these nosodes have decreased active diseases and can prevent their spread. The use of this alternative medicine may imply that vaccinations are no longer needed but as to its implications, no study has yet been conducted.

2. Another area which is looked at by alternative medicine for dogs is the use of chemical in controlling fleas and ticks. These fleas and ticks are the primary issues of many pet owners. Alternative veterinary medicine suggests that instead of chemical use, one can use garlic, different herbs and a brewer's yeast. Some have even developed a natural insecticide in the daisy family called the pyrethrins. But of course, nothing can still beat the proper care and grooming of your pet dogs like giving them the right hygiene, right diet and right care. You have to continually clean the area where they would sleep or where they would stay. You have to check if their shampoo is right for them, including their grooming powder.

3. With regard to allergies and arthritis, an alternative medicine for dogs can be the use of anti-oxidants and preparations such as chondrotin sulfate and glucosamines and Omega fatty acid supplements. The use of these is an alternative to the use by many of different pharmaceutical products in healing the allergies of the dogs and the arthritis for some.

Nothing will prevent you from trying alternative medicine for dogs but you have to ensure you that you have to talk to your veterinarian who will diagnose your pet's illness and whether she can suggest for alternative medicine. If you want alternative medicine, find for a qualified practitioner and not just any fake practitioners. What is at stake here is the condition and the health of your favorite pet. And if you try alternative medicine, do not expect quick and extensive results because these only offer simple and modest results. The best solution perhaps is to integrate alternative medicine to the traditional medicine and treatment of dogs. Dogs are man's best friend so you have to give the best medicines and treatment for your dogs.

Introduction To Alternative Medicine

As time passes, people are becoming more accepting of alternative medicine, but what exactly is it? An introduction to alternative medicine seems appropriate.

Alternative medicine is a term that has come to describe health care treatment that strays from what we now consider to be conventional ways of treating illness or injury. It is interesting to note, however, that in many cases these alternative treatments have been around much longer than the "conventional" treatments we tend to rely on. Alternative medicine is typically used in the place of conventional medicine. In some cases, patients choose to utilize the treatments which fall under the umbrella of alternative medicine along with a more conventional treatment plan. This is called complementary medicine.

There are some people who take issue with the term "alternative medicine." They point out that whether a treatment is considered to be a deviation from mainstream medicine depends a lot on where you live. It also varies a lot by culture. What might be considered alternative in one area is a lot more conventional in another. Typically though, alternative medicine consists of several different areas. Chiropractic services, herbalism, ayurveda, homeopathy, naturopathic medicine, unani, traditional Chinese medicine and osteopathy are the main branches of alternative medicine.

Chiropractors deal with the spine and nervous system. Manipulation is done in order to correct subluxation of the spine. Those who believe in chiropractic treatment believe that a subluxation can cause the nervous system to function improperly which can cause many different health problems. Herbalism is a traditional form of medicine which utilizes plants and plant extracts. It has existed for thousands of years. There is some evidence to suggest it was practiced as long as 60,000 years ago. Ayurveda originated in the Indian subcontintent and focuses on finding physical, mental and spiritual harmony.

Homeopathy is a somewhat controversial alternative medicine treatment. Followers of this treatment have identified certain agents which cause a healthy person to have symptoms of various illnesses if undiluted. In order to treat these illnesses, a diluted version of the agent is given to the patient. Some people feel that because the agent is so diluted, there is no reason to believe that homeopathy is anything more than a placebo effect. Naturopathic medicine works to assist the body in using its own ability to heal itself. Unani is based on the belief that four basic element exist in the body and they need to be balanced in order to stay healthy. Traditional Chinese medicine consists of many different treatments that originated in China over thousands of years. Osteopathy works to maintain the health of the body through the musculoskeletal system.

Alternative medicine continues to gain in popularity all the time, as many people are seeking a way to treat their illnesses without turning to synthetic drugs. Most of these treatments have been around for thousands of years and their successes have been many.

Complementary vis-à-vis alternative medicine

What is the difference between complementary and alternative medicine?

Complementary medicine is utilized with traditional medicine. An example of this is making use of aromatherapy to make patients be at ease after surgery. Another example is the use of acupuncture to minimize side effects of cancer treatments in patients.

On the other hand, alternative medicine completely replaces conventional medicine. Many practices and procedures are included in this broad category. An example of this is making use of a special dietary procedure rather than going through surgery or chemotherapy radiation in treating cancer. Most insurance companies do not provide coverage for these kinds of practices.

Integrative Medicine

You can also make use of what is known as integrative medicine, which mixes conventional medical treatments with complementary alternative medicine methods.

Integrative medicine is known as a complete approach to patient care and involves body, mind and spirit. An example of this is the use of relaxation techniques to minimize stress during chemotherapy sessions.

Take your pick from these types of medical treatments for your particular concern. You can choose from a variety of medical practices, whether conventional, complementary, alternative or integrative medicine, to suit your health needs. You should research thoroughly before doing anything.

So What is Alternative Medicine?

Alternative medicine is a term that for many means unlicensed doctors trying to cure strange diseases using even stranger experimental methods. But, the truth is that not very long ago, alternative medicine was the common source of medical treatment. As modern medicine grew, alternative medicine was pushed out of the consciousness of the mainstream population.

These days, alternative treatments are gaining in popularity every day. There are now numerous treatment facilities that offer many treatments that were once written off as frauds. University degrees in this type of medicine are now being offered in many countries around the world, and they are finding that students are incredibly interested in courses on subjects like homeopathic treatments and naturopathic medicine.

What Does Alternative Medicine Mean?

Alternative medicine is a term used to describe any medical treatment or practice that is not considered modern medicine. Scientists use fact-based research as criteria for proving a medical practice. Some types of alternative treatments may not have this scientific research backing it. Alternative treatments are sometimes used in place of modern treatments, but many times it is used in treatments that are considered complimentary treatments. Complementary treatments are alternative medicine practices that are combined with traditional medicine treatments. These days, more and more alternative treatments are becoming mainstream.

There are many different types of alternative treatments. Even prayer can be a type of alternative treatment. Researchers have studied how prayer is connected to a person's overall health, and have concluded that it does play a role in the healing process. Some may use prayer as their only form of medical treatment, but most prefer to combine prayer and more traditional medical procedures.

Homeopathic medicine is another common form. This medical system is based on the belief that "like cures like." In homeopathic medicine, an allergen or illness is given to a person in small doses to help their immune system build a tolerance to it.

Many people have heard of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as it is one of the most common types of alternative medicine. This system focuses on the balance of a person's Qi (pronounced Chee). It is believed that when this energy is balanced, the body will be in good health. His balance is maintained through herbs and supplements, acupuncture, and meditation.

Whether or not to try alternative treatments is a personal choice. These days, it is easier than ever before to locate a qualified alternative medicine practitioner, and as more and more people opt for these types of treatment their services will become a larger part of our everyday healthcare options.
